CIVIL WAR Antique ROGERS & SPENCER Army Revolver
Scarce 1865 Army Contract with High Condition!
Here we present an antique Rogers & Spencer US Contract Army Revolver in .44 Caliber, made circa 1865 near Utica, New York in Willow Dale. Only about 5,800 were produced and this one is among the 5,000 that went to fulfil a US contract late in the war. These revolvers were based on the Freeman design and featured a solid frame like the Whitneys and the Remingtons. This was a high quality firearm that would have excelled on the battlefield. Its capacity was 6 shots of .44 caliber ball out of a 7-1/2 octagonal barrel. It is handsome with a lustrous blue finish. Grips are distinctly flared at the bottom for purchase.
This one bears single letter government inspector marks throughout and a clear cartouche on the left grip. The left grip also bears a very intentionally placed notch as well as a bit of graffiti.
The overall condition is very fine. The original blue finish remains bright with 90% coverage. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The grips are in great shape with a bit more wear around the left skirt of the grip where is would have come into contact with the body when carried on a belt. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The action is excellent and crisp. Here is a fantastic and scarce specimen of a quality Civil War revolver!
