Antique J. STEVENS & Co. NEW MODEL Second Issue LONG-BARRELED Pocket Rifle
NICKEL PLATED BRASS FRAME With Matching Shoulder Stock!
Here we present an antique J. Stevens & Company New Model Second Issue Pocket Rifle, manufactured circa 1880 in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. About 8,000 of these rifles were produced between 1872 and 1896. This pistol was considered one of the most accurate target pistols of the day and comes with the original attachable wire stock. In the 1880s, advertisements for these guns started to refer to them as “Bicycle Rifles”, likely as a marketing tactic to sell them to cyclists of that era.
This version is the first of the medium-frame models, with a frame width of 1″. All of its predecessors have a .625″ wide frame. It was chambered for .22 and .32 rimfire cartridges and was offered with barrel lengths of 10″, 12″, 15″ or 18″ that are part-octagonal in configuration. External hammer has the firing pin mounted on it. The shoulder stock is nickel-plated and fitted differently than the small-frame models, in that there is a dovetail in the butt and top leg is secured by a knurled screw.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore is in good shape with nice rifling. This example includes a matching stock. Here is a wonderful example of an American made “Bicycle Rifle” to collect and display.
