Antique OVER/UNDER Swivel Barrel Pistol by BOUTET
19th Century Large Percussion Belt Pistol
Here we present an antique Swivel Barreled Percussion Pistol by Boutet of Versailles, France, made circa the early 19th Century in Liege, Belgium. This pistol was designed by the famous French gunsmith and bladesmith Nicolas Noel Boutet. Boutet was the son of the royal gunsmith Noel Boutet and became his father’s assistant. He oversaw small arms weapons manufacture under Napoleon.
This pistol would have been a fantastic weapon for self-defense during this period when single-shot pistols were the norm. To switch barrels, cock the hammer and pull the front trigger to release the barrels and swivel them so that the bottom barrel becomes the top. Both bores are .60 caliber. The lock is marked “BOUTET/A VERSAILLES”. Hammer, lock, trigger guard are engraved. It was made in Belgium. The right side of the barrels bears a Liege proof mark.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a dark patina. The markings are clear and legible. The grip is solid. The bores are smooth and dusty. The action on this pistol is excellent.
