Antique REMINGTON New Model ARMY .44 Revolver
Civil War Circa 1865 Percussion Revolver
Here we present an antique Remington New Model Army Revolver, made circa 1865 in Ilion, New York. The Remington Army Revolver was Colt’s biggest competition for military contracts during the American Civil War. Colt kept his top spot with his Model 1860 Army but Remington was certainly in the running and took the second spot for handguns fielded in the war. These would have been issued to cavalrymen and officers and others purchased them privately. The design was a bit more robust than Colt’s, having the solid frame with a top strap. The Remington Army went on to be used after the Civil War and on into the Indian Wars of the West.
The top of the barrel is marked “PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION, NEW YORK U.S.A./NEW-MODEL”. There are small, single letter government inspection marks throughout. The left grip is double stamped “BH” for Benjamin Hannis.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have seen a bit of weathering and have a mostly dark gray patina. The markings are legible. Serial numbers match. The grips are in good shape. The bore is in good shape with strong rifling under the dust. The action on this revolver is excellent. Here is a military accepted Remington Army for your collection!
