Antique SHARPS 4-Shot PEPPERBOX .30 Rimfire Pistol
Great Civil War Era Pocket Pistol!
Here we present an antique C. Sharps & Co. .30 Rimfire Pepperbox Pistol, made from 1859-1874 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was made by the man made famous for his namesake carbine, Christian Sharps. It is a very interesting design for a pocket gun as it has four fixed barrels in a square configuration, and the firing pin rotates 90 degrees with every pull of the hammer. A button on the front of the frame allows all four barrels to slide forward enough to load and unload. While Smith & Wesson cornered the market on cartridge revolvers until 1869, Sharps invented and produced an innovative pistol with a revolving firing pin and stationary barrels as to not violate patents.
The left side of the frame is marked “C. SHARPS/PATENT 1859”. The right side is marked “C. SHARPS & CO./PHILADA. PA”.
The overall condition is very good. The barrels have a smooth gray patina. The brass frame is in good condition. The markings are clear and legible. The numbers match. The grips are in great shape. The bores are clear with good rifling. The action on this pistol is strong and the rotating firing pin is functional.
