Product Description

Antique SPENCER M1865 CAVALRY Repeating Carbine

US Army Inspected for the INDIAN WARS

Here we present an antique Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. Rifle, made circa 1865 in Boston, Massachusetts. These lever-operated, breech-loading rifles were marvels of the time and had an impact on how war was to be fought in the future. Though their service life in the U.S. military was relatively short, the Spencer story includes Christopher Spencer, the inventor of the rifle, demonstrating and shooting with President Abraham Lincoln, who gave his full endorsement of the piece. Supposedly, during the Battle at Gettysburg, a captured Rebel said one could “load in the morning and fire all day!” This was due to the Spencer’s most endearing quality: a 7-round magazine tube in the butt of the gun. This gave the shooter phenomenal firepower in a day when most soldiers were muzzle-loading single shots or even singly loading their breech-loading carbines. Known for their rugged reliability, this is one of the iconic carbines of the Civil War and Western Frontier.

This specimen is one of 23000 made in 1865 and 1866 for a government contract. The top of the frame is marked “SPENCER REPEATING/ RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS/ PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860. The barrel is marked “M 1865”. Two government inspector cartouches are located behind the sling ring bar. The clearer of the two is marked “DAP” for Dwight A. Perkins. Single letter inspection marks may be found throughout. It comes equipped with a leather sling. This one very well may have fought in the Indian Wars as the United States expanded ever Westward.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are legible. The walnut stock is stout and sturdy. The bore is well-rifled and in good condition. The action is excellent. Here is a solid specimen of a Cavalry Carbine used in the Indian Wars after the American Civil War ended!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 20 inches.

Caliber:  .56-50 Spencer Rimfire
