Antique SPRINGFIELD U.S. Model 1863 RIFLE-MUSKET
Made at The SPRINGFIELD ARMORY Circa 1864
Here we present a Springfield U.S. Model 1863 Rifle-Musket, manufactured at the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts circa 1864.
The M1863 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the war. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1863 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel, and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike a solid, round ball. Almost immediately after the war, the US military switched from the old muzzle loading type weapons to the newer breech loading rifles, bringing an end to the musket as a standard frontline firearm in American history.
The lock is marked “U.S./SPRINGFIELD” and dated “1864” on the back of the lock. The left side of the barrel is marked “V/P” and Eagle Head. The left side of the stock is marked “ESA”. These inspector’s initials are for Erskine S. Allin, who would eventually invent the conversion that would replace the Model 1861. “DONALD/1050 N SPAULDING” is carved into the left butt.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is in good shape and solid. The bore is in very good shape with clear rifling. The action is excellent, sharp and crisp. Here is a very good example of the venerable M1863, the primary weapon of the American Civil War!
