Antique US Contract Model 1808 FLINTLOCK MUSKET
By “H. OSBORNE” Dated “1817”
Here we present an antique US Model 1808 Flintlock Musket, made in Springfield, Massachusetts circa 1817 by H. Osborne. Europe was embroiled in the Napoleonic Wars and the young United States was sorely unprepared for any major military action, so Congress moved to equip state militias in 1808. About 85,200 “Model 1808” Muskets were ordered through more than 19 different contractors. It is estimated that only about half were delivered to the state militias. This move proved to be none too soon as the War of 1812 brought part of the European conflict to the shores of the US.
This musket was made by a smaller contractor in Springfield, Massachusetts. The lock is marked “H. OSBORNE” the tang is dated “1817”. The lock and the top of the barrel bear federal style eagle head markings. The top of the barrel is marked “P” for proved.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a light gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The stock has a well-done repair at the wrist, otherwise the stock is smooth and solid. The bore is dark. The action on this musket is strong.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
