CASED Antique KETLAND & Co. Flintlock Pistols
Handsome Flintlock Pistols
Here we present an antique Cased Pair of Ketland & Co. Flintlock Pistols, made circa 1801 in London, England. The Ketland family name became famous in the late 18th and early 19th Centuries for the firearms that bear their name. Thomas Ketland began his trade in the mid-18th Century and his son W. Ketland began trading under his own name circa 1800.
This pair is fascinating because, at first glance, they appear to be identical. However, when one looks closely he will see that one is a very close copy made long ago. Notice variations in font of the markings, shape of the hammer, location of the proof marks. These are very handsome pistols that make a very nice set in this custom fitted walnut case. The locks are marked “W./KETLAND/& Co.” Included is a neat powder flask with a compartment for keeping ball projectiles as well as a number of lead cast projectiles.
The overall condition of both pistols is very good. The metal surfaces have a dark patina. The markings are clear and legible. The stocks are in great shape. The bores are smooth and dusty. The action on these pistols is excellent.
