CHATANOOGA, TN Antique DeLong & Son LONG RIFLE
.44 Caliber Percussion Tennessee Rifle
Here we present an antique DeLong & Son Half Stock Rifle, manufactured circa the latter half of the 19th Century in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Lucius DeLong operated in Chattanooga circa 1860-1890 under the trade name “DeLong & Son”. This would have made a great rifle for just about anything one would need in the mid-19th Century: game for the pot or protection for the homestead.
This rifle features a nearly 34 inch barrel in .44 caliber. Both the top of the barrel and the lock are marked “DELONG & SON/CHATTANOOGA TENN”. These original components have been restocked but thankfully kept together in a newer setting. The fore end is pewter with the rest of the hardware being brass. Trigger guard is engraved and there are several decorative escutcheons throughout, one in the shape of an eagle.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape. The lines at the top and bottom of the butt stock are not cracks but an attempt at a decorative border. The bore is nearly bright with sharp rifling. The action on this rifle is not currently functional, though there is good spring tension. It is very likely that the set trigger needs dialing in. Here is a scarce rifle from Chattanooga, Tennessee!
