CIVIL WAR Antique US TRENTON, NEW JERSEY Contract Model 1861 Rifle-Musket
With GAR Property Marked REVISED ARMY REGULATIONS 1861
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, manufactured under a contract held by J.T. Hodge and A.M. Burton at the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Company in Trenton, New Jersey in 1864. Also included is an original Revised Army Regulations 1861 manual from the Civil War period, property marked by the Grand Army of the Republic, Colonel J.W. Patterson Post 151.
The M1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory. Estimates vary, but Flayderman states that 11,495 were made at the Trenton Locomotive & Machine Company. This was the last hurrah of the rifle-musket as arms development and tactics rapidly advanced during the short period of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, the 1861 represented new technology as it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow based, conical projectile that was small enough to quickly push down the muzzle of a rifled barrel, and expanded to create a good gas seal unlike a solid, round ball. Almost immediately after the war, the US military switched from the old muzzle loading type weapons to the newer breech loading rifles, bringing an end to the musket as a standard frontline firearm in American history.
“NJ” is marked on both the left side of the barrel and the stock. “US” is marked on the bayonet and buttplate tang. The lock reads “1864” and “US/TRENTON”. This musket includes a copy of “Revised Army Regulations of 1861”, which was property marked originally by the Grand Army of the Republic, Post 151 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Later property marked by Henry Richard Groscost of Ohio (20th or 21st Century marking).
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and tight. The bore remains in good shape with nice rifling. Solid stock. The bayonet attaches and fits well. The retainer ring is missing its screw. The book is in very good condition likewise and has been stamped with multiple property markings. Binding and cloth are in great shape. A superb Civil War set to add to the collection or to get one started!
