COLT LIGHTING Small Frame SLIDE ACTION Rifle Chambered in .22 RIMFIRE C&R
Pump Action Rifle Made in 1903
Here we present a Colt Lightning Small Frame Slide Action Rifle, made in 1903, in Hartford, Connecticut.
This was Colt’s entry into the pistol caliber rifle and carbine market, which was absolutely dominated by Winchester at this time. Pistol caliber rifles were instrumental in the hands of those settling the West, as they were able to carry one type of ammunition to feed both their long gun and their sidearm. It also enabled a rifle to be stoked with the maximum number of cartridges, sacrificing power for capacity, useful when outnumbered at close range. The Colt Lightning was fairly successful, but never approached the numbers that Winchester’s lever actions were able to achieve.
This specimen is chambered in .22 rimfire, a very light and handy cartridge for hunting small game or just going out to do some plinking.
The overall condition is near fine. The action is strong and crisp. The bore is in good condition. The initials “JAH” are punched into the top of the barrel and barrel tang. The tang has been drilled and tapped for a rear peep sight. Front and rear sights are replacements. A nicely refinished Colt rifle in .22!
