ENGRAVED Antique DURS EGG Pepperbox Revolver
1840s London, England Self-Defense Sidearm
Here we present an antique British Pepperbox Revolver by Durs Egg of London, made circa the 1840s. Egg was one of London’s best gunmakers. He was an immigrant from the continent, originally from Solothurn, Switzerland before continuing his training in Paris. He went to London in the early 1770s where he set up the business that would be carried on by his sons and their sons long after his death. Durs Egg was considered a trendsetter for fine arms in his day and his works are highly desirable today.
This piece by Egg would have been a very good sidearm for self-defense in early-19th Century London. It features a double action only type of mechanism and utilizes the percussion firing system. This example is finely engraved on the frame, hammer, and trigger guard. The left side reads “D. EGG LONDON”. The barrel cluster is scalloped in between chambers with some like engraving near the muzzle. Each flute is proof marked. This is a very handsome revolver.
The overall condition is near fine. The frame bears 95% of its finish. The markings and engravings are clear. The grips are smooth and solid. The bores are smooth and in good shape. The action is strong. Here is a very finely appointed pepperbox from one of London’s best!
