ENGRAVED Antique SHARPS & Hankins Pepperbox Pistol

SCARCE .32 Caliber Model 3B w Factory Engraving

Here we present an antique Sharps & Hankins Model 3B Pepperbox Pistol, made circa 1866 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Christian Sharps invented his famously large bore, breech-loading rifle in 1848, after practicing gun-making under John Hall at Harpers Ferry Armory. In 1859, he premiered another unique design in the 4-barreled pepperbox pistol with a unique revolving firing pin, made for 19th Century concealed carry. This repeating design was able to utilize the new rimfire ammunition like Smith & Wesson, without infringing on Smith & Wesson’s Rollin White Patent for bored through chambers on a revolver’s cylinder. This gave Sharps a leg up in the market since everyone else either had to produce single shot pistols, come up with an alternate ammunition and weapon design, or just stick with percussion until the patent expired. They made very nice, easy to use and compact firearms for 19th Century conceal and carry.

This specimen is a rare example of a factory engraved Sharps pepperbox. Only about 2,000 of these Model 3Bs were made in total, making it a scarce gun as it is. It is chambered in .32 rimfire short, with only the Model 4 series, chambered in .32 rimfire long, surpassing it in firepower. This gun is still very concealable, but has more grip to hold onto, and more firepower compared to the many thousands of .22 versions that were produced. In addition, this larger model features an automatic extractor, so that when the barrel cluster is opened, the brass rim of the cartridges catch and are pulled out.

The overall condition is fine. About 30% of the original high polish blue is present on the barrel cluster. The markings and engraving are clear. The smooth grips are also fine, showing surprisingly little wear. The bores are distinctly rifled and shiny. The action is functional.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. No other engraved examples currently found for sale worldwide!

Barrel is 3-1/2 inches in length.

Caliber: .32 rimfire short

Bore is in fine condition and the firing mechanism is functional.

Overall condition as seen in photos.

Don’t miss a rare opportunity to put an engraved Sharps .32 Pepperbox into your collection!
