MAGNIFICENT Cased PAIR of ZUGNO Flintlock Pistols
Made Circa 1720-1770 in Brescia!
Here we present an antique Cased Pair of Giovanni Battista Zugno Brescian Flintlock Pistols, manufactured circa mid-1700s in Brescia, Italy. Zugno was a prominent gun make in Italy between 1720 and 1770.
These pistols have barrels that begin octagonal and transition to round about midway. These pistols are incredibly ornate and were made for someone of some standing as status symbols. They may have been presentation pieces. The locks are marked “G. B. ZUGNO”. They have beautifully carved stocks. The wooden ramrods are excellent with brass tips. The metalwork is truly amazing with all the brass, gold, and silver work that has been performed. Each pistol has no fewer than seven silver busts scattered throughout on the barrels, trigger guards, thumb plates, side plate, and three on each pommel. The case is from a later period but by no means new. It comes furnished with a brass bullet mold and several balls in the size required of these pistols. A mallet, brush, powder flask, fancy screw driver, oiler and cleaning rod are also included. Each accessory has its own compartment. These pistols were no case queens, however. By the overall wear these were indeed carried and fired during their period of use.
The overall condition of both pistols is fine. These pistols retain most of the intricate metalwork and the markings are clear. The stocks are in very good shape with some minor repairs from long ago. The bores are smooth and clean, with a plum color. The actions are excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a truly gorgeous set of 18th Century Brescian pistols made during the Age of Enlightenment.
