Matched, CASED Antique Euro SxS PINFIRE Pistols
With Period Parisian Cartridge Box
Here we present an antique Pair of Double Barrel Pinfire Pistols, made circa 1850 in Europe, very likely France or Spain. In 1835 Casimir Lefaucheux patented one of the first self-contained, metallic firearms cartridges. This very early design included a case with ball, powder and primer, but what made it different from what was to come later in cartridge development was the “firing pin” that projected out of the side of the case. It was this pin that was struck and detonated the primer inside. Use of his invention was prolific throughout Europe, and his son Eugene even developed a revolver that utilized the cartridge. However, it was simpler and less expensive to make single or double-shot pistols, like these.
These matching 12mm pinfire pistols come in a nicely built fitted walnut case with a dark green velvet lining. It comes equipped with a key to lock the case as well as a cleaning and ejector rod. In the center is a period cardboard box that one contained 12mm pinfire cartridges. The box is marked “CARTOUCHES/12 millimetes/HOULLIER-BLANCHARD/Arquebusier brevete/PARIS/A LONGUE PORTEE”.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces of the pistols are bright with some minor pitting. The markings are clear and legible. The wooden grips show wear but remain solid. The bores are smooth and dark. The actions are functional.
