NEW YORK Style Half Stock PERCUSSION Long Rifle
With Engraved Lock & Lollipop Tang Sight
Here we present an antique New York-Style Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the 1840s. This was a short and handy rifle in .38 caliber that would have made a good hunting or target rifle. The walnut stock features hand-cut checkering on the forestock and wrist. The lock is very nicely engraved with a few game birds at the back. The fore end has a pewter cap. The rest of the hardware is brass. The barrel has the desirable octagon-to-round transition with a turned down section at the muzzle for a ball starter. The front sight is a blade that is windage adjustable in its dovetail. There are two rear sights, a classic V-notch secured to the barrel and a lollipop-style tang sight with a small aperture. The only visible markings are found on the right side of the barrel, just above the nipple bolster, and are quite faint and small.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The bore is fine, bright and sharp. The stock is in good shape with a small repair just forward of the lock. The action on this rifle is excellent.
