P. WEBLEY & Son METROPOLITAN POLICE .450 Revolver
Fine 1880s Antique British Police Marked Revolver
Here we present an antique P. Webley & Son Model Metropolitan Police Revolver, made circa the 1880s in Birmingham, England. This revolver was an update to the Webley R.I.C. (Royal Irish Constabulary) which was adopted by many police forces throughout the British Commonwealth beginning in the late 1860s. Significantly, it was adopted by the London Metropolitan Police and was cleverly and successfully marketed as such.
It holds 6 rounds of .450 Boxer and is short and stout, being intended for concealed carry by the police. It is also equipped with a lanyard. On the left side of the frame is stamped “WEBLEY’S” over a pair of cuffed hands above the marking “M.P.” for Metropolitan Police. A winged bullet is pictured above “W&S” for Webley & Son. The police inventory stamp and number “P/No/431” is found on the front of the frame, just under the cylinder axis pin. The top of the frame is marked “P. WEBLEY & SON/BIRMINGHAM”. Birmingham proof marks are located on the barrel as well as around the cylinder. The revolver loads via a loading gate on the right side and the ejector rod is nested in the cylinder axis pin. The cylinder is solid with no flutes.
The overall condition is fine. The original blue finish is about 25% with the balance a soft gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The original wooden grip is nicely checkered and in great condition. The bore is in very good condition with sharp rifling. The action is excellent in both double and single action. Here is a fantastic example of a Webley Metropolitan Police Revolver!
