CONFEDERATE C&R Q PROVIDENCE TOOL M1861 Rifle-MUSKET Civil War Antique ACW
RARE “Q” MARKED With 1863 Dated Lock w/BAYONET
Here we present an antique “Q” Confederate Cleaning & Repair Stamped U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, made by contract by Providence Tool Company of Providence, Rhode Island, in 1863. As described in “Captured & Collected”Confederate Reissued Firearms by Knott. This is a fantastic example of a U.S. gun that was essentially a battlefield pick-up by the Confederate States Ordnance teams (or civilians) and placed into the Confederate cleaning and repair (“C&R”) system for reissue to Confederate troops. Between 200,000 and 250,000 firearms were turned in for refurbishing at either Danville, Staunton, Lynchburg, or Richmond. This rifle bears a Confederate States final inspector’s stamp “Q” just forward of the trigger guard tang. The identity of the individual inspector is unknown. Theories state the letter may be a real initial or possibly an assigned letter. In any case, the number and variety of guns bearing this mark point to someone working at the Richmond Arsenal/Artillery Workshop. This is a nice Model 1861 “Everyman’s” Rifle that no doubt saw service in the field during the war, and at some point changed hands amount combatants, moving from a Union soldier into the hands of a lucky Confederate soldier!
The Model 1861 is representative of the “everyman’s” rifle during the American Civil War. About 1.5 million rifle-muskets were made in the U.S., over 800,000 of which were made by the Springfield Armory, while the others were made by over 20 different private contractors, providing ample collecting opportunity amongst all the variants. Only about 70,000 were made by Providence Tool Company.
The overall condition is very good. Dark, even patina throughout. Excellent action. The bore is in good shape for its age with thin rifling. This example sports a solid stock with use apparent. Legible markings throughout. The bayonet is marked “US” and remains in good shape. Here is a great opportunity to own a true veteran of the American Civil War that was fielded by both sides!
