PHILADELHIA Antique KRIDER Double Barrel .46 Caliber SIDE x SIDE Pistol
Massive, Double Barrel .46 Caliber Pistol!
Here we present an antique J. Krider Marked Double Barrel Percussion Pistol, made circa the 1840s-50s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John H. Krider (1813-1886) began his career as a gunsmith in 1826. Working as an apprentice under Prosper Vallee in his gun shop at 2nd and Walnut in Philadelphia, the same location that the British used as their officer’s headquarters during the American Revolution. Krider took possession of Vallee’s shop sometime between 1839 and 1856 and named it Krider Gun Shop. When the American Civil War broke out, not only was Krider called upon to provide weaponry and ammunition to the soldiers, but his shop also served as a cartridge loading station. Throughout his career he would become a well-known gunsmith, taxidermist, and ornithologist, receiving high honors at expositions held in both Philadelphia and New York. He also received thirteen merits at the Franklin Institute’s Exhibition of American Manufacturers.
This pistol is similar to what the British called a Howdah pistol in India. This was a pistol or even small carbine with large, dual bores that could be quickly and effectively employed from the back of an elephant against such predators as tigers. They are so-called for the Howdah or the fixture that was the cab in which people rode the elephant. Tigers were a danger when traveling or hunting in the bush. This one may have been made with similar purposes in mind. It has the dual bores in the large .46 caliber. They are smoothbore, likely intended for faster loading and because ranges weren’t expected to be very far. Two shots were welcome in a day when most pistols or rifles would have had only one. This one also features double triggers, back action locks, and good sights. Whether against 4-legged or 2-legged predators, this pistol would have been a worthy sidearm.
The overall condition is very fine. Excellent browning on the barrel with bright case colors. Blued trigger guard. The action is excellent. The smooth bores are in very good shape. The stock is solid, and the checkering remains sharp. This is the only such Krider pistol we have seen. It may very well be one of a kind!
