Rare U.S. SPRINGFIELD Model 1847 SAPPER MUSKETOON
1 of 80 Manufactured in 1855
Here we present an antique Springfield Armory US Model 1847 Sapper Musketoon made in 1855 in Springfield, Massachusetts. This musketoon is one of just 80 manufactured in 1855 and 830 manufactured in total in 1847-1856. Of these, 228 were altered to the Artillery configuration. These were short and handy muskets issued to sappers which were “engineer” type troops tasked with dealing with explosive ordnance (clearing or laying minefields), clearing roads, building fortifications, and other such tasks. As they would not always be on the front line of combat but might find themselves there and need a weapon, these muskets were the answer. Their shorter overall length made them more convenient than carrying around a full length musket.
The lock bears a federal eagle over “US” at center and “SPRING/FIELD/1855” on the tail. The butt-plate has “U.S.” stamped on it. This would have been found in the hands of a sapper during the American Civil War!
The overall condition is good. The iron surfaces are dark. The markings are mostly clear. The walnut stock has seen action and was smoothed out at some point. It remains smooth and solid. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is strong. Here is a true rarity among US military muskets!
