SOUTHERN LONG RIFLE Antique Full Stock KENTUCKY TENNESSEE .40 Caliber
Southern Style Percussion Plains Rifle
Here we present an antique Full Stock Southern Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .40 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or two-legged varmints. This rifle bears the hallmarks of many a Southern rifle, including the use of iron hardware throughout—brass was the standard for such rifles during this period, especially those coming out of the “cradle of American gunmaking”: Pennsylvania. Brass was usually in short supply in the hills of Tennessee though iron was not. The trigger guard is long and flat. The barrel tang is also long as well as narrow, widening where the screws attach it to the stock. The patchbox is the only part in brass and it features a flor d lis type finial. Full-length stock with a narrow butt stock and sharp curvature from the heel to the toe. A fantastic specimen of a Southern American rifle that might even have seen some use in the Civil War.
The overall condition is very good. The action functions properly. The bore is in good condition with nice rifling. The stock has a few small repairs as seen in the photos. Otherwise solid. A very nice and scarce rifle!
