Turn Off Barrel Antique GERMAN POCKET PISTOL
Mid-19th Century HIDEOUT Carry Gun in .42
Here we present a small antique Percussion Pistol, made circa 1841 in Germany. This small type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries, in Europe, as well as the colonies. They could be easily stowed in a pocket or in the case of a woman, a fur muff or purse. They were of course made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.
This specimen features a barrel which turns off of the frame for loading. This was advantageous to the user as shoving a ball with a ramrod via the muzzle was quite difficult. Loading from the breech allowed a larger ball to be used, improving the gas seal and making this diminutive pistol more efficient. German proof marks present are later than the make of the gun.
The overall condition is fair. The iron parts are gray. The markings are legible. The grip is in fair shape. There is a crack on the right side near the frame. The bore is smooth. The action is strong.
