“W.F.&CO. EXP.” Marked Antique COLT 1883 Shotgun
Shipped to San Francisco in 1891 Per Archive Letter
Here we present an antique Colt Model 1883 Hammerless Double Barrel Shotgun, sent to the Colt Agency in San Francisco, California, on February 18, 1891, per the 1969 dated Colt Archive Letter. This 12 Gauge shotgun originally came with a 30-inch barrel that was later cut down to a handier “coach” size. This specimen is marked “W.F.&CO. EXP.” on both the barrel rib and the left side of the frame. The frame is also marked “856”, which is presumably a rack number. The Colt barrel address is “COLT’S PT F A MFG CO HARTFORD CT USA”. The underside of the frame is marked “PATENTED/AUG. 22 SEPT. 19 1882”.
The overall condition is fair. The barrels retain good Damascus patterning. Patina is light brown. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The walnut stock shows quite a bit of use. The bores each have some dings, especially at the muzzle, but are otherwise smooth and clean. The action is functional. Here is a neat little coach shotgun from Colt that was shipped to San Francisco in the late 19th Century!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 18 inches.
Caliber: 12 Gauge
Overall condition as seen in photos.
